The Holy Doors
of the Four Major Basilicas of Rome
Holy Doors
After the last Holy Year of the Great Jubilee of 2000 the Holy Door at the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica was sealed. For the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, it will be reopened on December 8. "On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope," (The Face of Mercy, 3). The Roman basilicas of St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major also have Holy Doors for Jubilee Years, and these will be opened on December 13, the Third Sunday of Advent. On that same day, Holy Doors will be opened in Cathedral churches and designated shrine churches around the world.
